Banner, suffrage banner

This suffrage banner was designed by Mary Lowndes, the founder and chief organiser of the Artists' Suffrage League. The silk inner panel bears the arms and motto of the City of London. Lowndes designed a number of regional banners for the campaign. She always recommended the use of 'the old symbols' 'when they will service', but with a new twist for the 'new thing we are doing'. Lowndes believed a banner was 'a thing to float in the wind, to flicker in the breeze, to flirt its colourss for your please, to half show and half conceal a device you long to unravel; you do not want to read it, you want to worship it'.
