This photograph shows Duma Nokwe, General Secretary of the African National Congress, speaking at the 'No British Arms for South Africa' rally organised by the Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) on 17 March 1963. The rally in Trafalgar Square followed a march from Portland Place. Other speakers at the rally included Labour MP Barbara Castle and future British Prime Minister Harold WiIson.
The AAM grew out of the consumer boycott campaign started by South African exiles and their supporters in London in 1959. The early movement gained significant momentum from the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre which raised public consciousness of the injustices of the apartheid system. The AAM came into being on 30 March 1960. Its original headquarters were in the Gower Street offices of the Committee of African Organisations, a small federal body of African independence movements exiled in London.
