Picture, embroidered picture

Needlework picture embroidered in coloured silks and metal threads on natural linen with a white linen backing (possibly of a more recent date). The panel depicts Charles I as King and Martyr, within a border worked with flower heads, birds, butterflies and animals in each corner against a silver gilt ground.

Three separate events from the Bible are also represented, all from the Book of Daniel: i) Nebuchadnezzar the King made an image of gold (central figure). Daniel 3:1; ii) Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the fiery furnace (top right ) Daniel 3:16-30 and, iii) Daniel in the Lion's Den (in the reign of King Darius) Daniel 6: 1-27. The representation of Daniel in the Lion's Den is derived from the Apocryphal addition; hence the angel and prophet Habakkuk, shown top left.
