Underskirt, petticoat
Petticoat (ensemble) in pink damask. The fabric can be dated C1741 but the style of the dress is earlier; skirt is made to be pinned back.
Catalogue note by Natalie Rothstein. Pink silk damask, very high quality silk, closest in general style to the damasks of 1743 in T.391 and T.392-1972 in the V&A Museum. It is in Garthwaite's style but could be by another designer. Linen lining looks original. Material width: 21 1/4 ins; selvage: 1/4 in, 2 green 2 white stripes, 5 outer cords; repeat: single comber; length: 39 ins. Condition: faded - alas; this is a superb example of a high quality damask.
Fully lined with glazed wool (such as frequently seen lining quilted petticoats; waist originally bound with pink silk tape, same tape faces the hem; pocket slits; back opening with drawstrings at waist, otherwise pleated. Skirt panel seams in silk layer appear to be backstitched, running stitched in lining layer; skirt fullness is taken up in deep knife pleats facing towards the back; hem facing sewn with small running stitches along both edges; pocket slits bound with same silk tape such that approx 1/16” shows on outside and is sewn with small fell stitches, the remainder inside sewn with small running stitches; waist binding appears to have been sewn with fell stitches both inside and out; back opening edges are finished by turning fabric layers in towards each other and sewing with small running stitches; sides are longer than front and back, presumably to accommodate side hoops. Disintegrating waist binding has been covered at front with cotton (?) twill tape; otherwise appears unaltered.
