Underskirt, petticoat
Skirt; petticoat. Condition: good; unpicked underskirt restored in the Museum December 1966.
Catalogue note by Natalie Rothstein. Almost certainly a lustring the silk is striped in the warp with a broad yellow stripe punctuated by narrow pink stripes. Between the yellow stripe is a pinkish cream stripe with three tobine (or cannellé) stripes. On the yellow stripe there is a self-coloured floral trail and on the cream stripe small daisy like flowers. All these floral details are achieved by an interruption of the ground weave. Material width: 22 3/4-23 ins; selvage: 3/16 in. Repeat width: 5 5/8 ins; length 6 3/4 ins. The width is unusual - suggesting that it was sold as "3/4 ell wide" - although it is narrow for this.skirt ties up at the back; there are pocket slits at the sides.
Construction Details: fabric panels are joined with running stitch. Alteration Notes: see mimsy record re 1966 conservation work; hem, pocket slit edges, back opening edges are all just turned up narrowly and pressed, no stitching though there are some thread remnants.
