London Museum Docklands Archive — C.1915-1925
94 - 95 - 96 - 97 - 98.Canal. Hatch Mr. A. Frankling. Wharf. Mr Rawlings.
From title it is likely that the rights to the canal hatch featured in this image belonged to a Mr A Franklin and that the rights to the wharf belonged to a Mr Rawlings. A hatch was originally the name given to a toll gate on the canal. Toll houses also became known as hatches.
The photograph is one of over a hundred images covering the wharves and waterside buildings along Surrey Canal. The photographs were found stuck into a large Port of London Authority notebook and are annotated throughout in handwritten ink. We think it likely that the photographs were taken by a PLA employee.
