Half Moon Theatre Bar
The Half Moon Theatre Company was founded by actors Mike Irving and Maurice Colbourne in Aldgate in 1972. Along with the theatre's artistic director Guy Sprung, they set up the theatre in a former synagogue on Alie Street, once the heart of the East End's Jewish community. The theatre took its name from Half Moon Passage which connects Alie Street and Braham Street.
Renowned for its left-wing productions, the theatre achieved international notoriety in the 1970s staging plays by the Italian playwright Dario Fo among others. The theatre's success meant it had to look for larger premises in 1979 and moved to a former Methodist chapel on the Mile End Road. This photograph shows the bar at the original Half Moon Theatre on Alie Street.
