Missionary London
An illustration from the chapter on 'Missionary London' by Alec Roberts, from page 279 of volume III of 'Living London' by George Sims. These women are staying in the Ayahs' Home in Hackney, which opened in the late 19th century. Ayahs were Asian nannies who looked after British children in India. They also took care of children on board ship when they were voyaging between India and Britain. When the ayahs reached Britain, they had to stay there for as long as it took to find a job supervising children on the return journey to India. This home provided about 30 rooms for ayahs, and amahs, who were Chinese nannies.
