Living London: its work and its play, its humour and its pathos, its sights and its scenes
An essay on ‘Italy in London’ by Count E Armfelt, from volume 1of 'Living London' by George Sims, 1902. The essay is accompanied by images of Italian street artists and vendors. Musicians from northern Italy abounded in London during the 19th century. There was public concern about the recruitment of Italian children to work as street performers. Men called 'padrones' brought groups of these children to England and often exploited them. Italian vendors of plaster figures were another common sight.
