Passengers outside Gatwick Airport
Passengers waiting with their luggage outside Gatwick Airport in May 1973. Gatwick opened as a commercial airport in 1934 but it was not until the 1950s that it was recognised as a viable alternative to Heathrow. After a £7.8 million Government investment the airport was rebuilt and enlarged making it the second largest airport in the UK.
