Family of squatters, Camden
A family of squatters in a house in Camden in the early 1970s. Squatting is when a person who does not own a property physically take up residence in it. Squatting in England is a criminal offence but people squat for a variety of reasons such as poverty or protest. During the 1970s there were large numbers of people who objected to high rents charged by landlords and who believed that living rent free or squatting was a political statement.
