Recess time at the American School in London
Students at 'recess' or break time at the American School in London. The school was founded by Stephen Eckard in 1951. Eckard was an American journalist and former teacher who was living in London. He was encouraged by colleagues at the BBC to form a school that followed the American curriculum. Originally classes for the 13 pupils took place in his Knightsbridge flat however within 6 months there were more than 100 pupils and the school was moved to premises in Chelsea. In 1964 fundraising started for the building of a new school and by 1971 when this photograph was taken the new school building opened in St John's Wood.
