Giles Brandreth
Writer and broadcaster Giles Brandreth at the National Scrabble Championships in June 1971. Brandreth is himself a keen scrabble player, has written many books about the game and is President of the Association of British Scrabble Players. He organised the championships thinking it would be a small local competition but after placing adverts in national newspapers such as The Times and The Guardian over 3,00 people applied to take part in the championships. The winner was Stephen Haskell. The championships are still held annually.
