London Museum Docklands Library — 1819
Reid's Leith and London smack directory
In the 18th and early 19th century there were regular passenger services on sailing smacks between Scotland and London. The 430 mile journey could be completed in 42 hours but, as the guide warned potential travellers, it could take as much as ten days, depending on the weather. Reid’s guide contained timetables, maps of the route and helpful tips on avoiding seasickness – like drinking brandy and water.
