Oxfam shop, Hammersmith
Customers in the Oxfam store in Hammersmith in 1968. The original Oxfam Committee for Famine Relief was a group who started fundraising to send aid to Greece where famine had been caused by Allied naval blockages. The first Oxfam shop selling bric-a-brac opened in Broad Street in Oxford in 1948. Then as now the shops were staffed by volunteers so that all profits generated by sales could be directed towards helping those in need.
