Suez Question rally, 1956
In November 1956 a major demonstration in Trafalgar Square was organised by the Labour party against military action in Egypt. The main speaker was Aneurin Beven who attacted Prime Minister Anthony Eden’s foreign policy and the most popular protest slogan was ‘Law not War’. Pressure from the cabinet and the threat of a devaluation of the pound forced Eden to call a ceasefire after capturing only 23 miles of the Suez Canal.
