Charthorse Parade, Whit Monday, Regents Park
Parade of Carthorses in Regents Park on Whit Monday 1953. The parade had been held every year since 1895 and was intended as a way of encouraging carthorse owners to take more interest in the welfare of their horses. The decline in numbers of horse drawn transport in London was marked and organisers commented that the 304 horses entered in 1953 was in stark comparison to the year 1914 when over 1,000 horses were exhibited.
