The tragedy of the Marathon Race
Title page of 'The Graphic' for Saturday 1 August 1908, showing Doranda Pietri, the marathon runner, entering the stadium at the end of the race. The image is captioned: The Tragedy of the Marathon Race: Dorando, Utterly Exhausted, Entering the Stadium First, Only to Lose. "Even as he entered he staggered and reeled in complete exhaustion, and before he could complete the final lap he fell three times. Meanwhile, a group of people had rushed on to the track, and, though he at last struggled to the tape, their assistance caused him to be disqualified, the race being allotted to the next man, Hayes of America. The Queen, however, presented a special cup to Dorando in honour of his pluck."
