The Epsom Derby was, and is, Britain's richest horse race, held annually in June. Nicholls work included photographing the wealthy at leisure during the 'London Season'. Whilst the scene here could almost be a staged one, it is indeed a candid shot showing people unposed and socialising. Nicholls was an early independent press photographer; a great self-publicist who regarded himself as an artist as much as a reporter.
