Notting Hill Couple
After leaving Jamaica at the age of 15, Charlie Phillips settled in London with his parents. He lived in Notting Hill and became a self-taught photographer who took pictures of life in the area.
This photograph, entitled 'Notting Hill Couple', is a close-up of a black man and a white woman. He rests his hand on her shoulder while she tilts her head towards his. Both look directly at the camera.
By the 1960s, civil rights organisations were encouraging interracial couples who were penalised for their relationships to take their cases to the Supreme Court. In 1967, the same year this photograph was taken, the Supreme Court in the United States declared anti-miscegenation laws unconstitutional. By this date, many American states had already legalised interracial marriage.
