Ugandan refugees, Heathrow
This photograph by Charlie Phillips documents the arrival of a Ugandan refugee family at Heathrow Airport in 1972. Almost 60.000 Ugandan citizens of South Asian descent were expelled from the country by President Idi Amin in 1972 and given 90 days to leave. Many Ugandan Asians had settled in the country under Briitsh colonial rule and approximately 28.500 relocated to Britain, but not without struggle and discrimination. The application of the label 'refugees' was a political choice as many of these migrants were British passport holders.
