Social History — 1994-1996
Commemorative ribbon
This ribbon was worn by supporters of the campaign to bring Stephen Lawrence’s killers to justice. Orange was the teenager’s favourite colour.
The murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence in Eltham in spring 1993 by a racist gang forced Britain to confront an ugly truth. Despite decades of laws and campaigns, racism remained a fact of British life, even embedded into the police in the form of ‘insitutionalised racism’.
