Workers at Royal Albert Dock
Workers at the Royal Albert Dock are depicted loading or off-loading goods from a moored ship using a crane.
The Dock, which opened to shipping in 1880, was planned as an extension of the Royal Victoria Dock to assist with international trading. Tobacco trading proved to be successful and, when adequate refrigerators were installed, the Royal Albert Dock began to handle imports of meat, vegetables and fruit from Europeon countries.
The Royal Docks ceased to trade during the 1980s due to a number of developments, including increased competition and advances in technology.
