Printed Ephemera — 1967
Flyer, handbill, programme
Flyer and programme for the Marquee Club, 90 Wardour Street. Printed in black and white on cream paper. On one side are printed details of admission and membership and information about the Winds or Music Festival due to take place that August. On the reverse is printed a monthly programme listing, in two columns what bands/performers are appearing at the club each day in July 1967. Bands listed include Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, Geno Washington, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky Mick & Tich, Marmalade.
This programme represents a significant period in the history of the Marquee club that had moved from Oxford Street to 90 Wardour Street three years earlier in 1964. By this time the club had become the most important music venue in London for emerging rock and jazz bands. The programmes bear witness to the club's role in 'discovering' a number of artists and bands such as Jimi Hendrix, Cream and The Nice. The music festival referred to on the programme was a forerunner of the Reading Festival. The Marquee organised their first jazz festival in 1961. Throughout the 1960s the venue of the annual event changed eventually finding a permanent home in Reading in 1971, where it is still held today.
