Cylinder, phonograph cylinder
The handwritten description on this wax phonograph cylinder's box reads "Old Southgate Church Bells pealing the new year (1904) in 12.30 mid night 1/1/04. / Taken by H.C. Wall from the Road. /Old Graphaphone [sic] speed 132. / New Graphaphone [sic] speed D2."
The recording was made by Cromwell Wall (1866-1937) who lived with his wife and children in Parkhurst Road, New Southgate. 'Old Southgate Church' is Christ Church Southgate. Cromwell wheeled his phonograph over a mile in his children's pram from their home to record these bells.
Attached is a photograph of Old Southgate Church taken by William Atwood in about 1870. The photograph is in the Museum of London's collections(IN39554).
