Cylinder, phonograph cylinder
The handwritten description on this wax phonograph cylinder's box reads "There is a happy land. Sung by Gladys, Hilda, Oliver & Leslie on Sunday 14/6/1903. / Spoilt at beginning."
Gladys, Hilda, Oliver and Leslie Wall were the four oldest children of Cromwell Wall (1866-1937) who made this recording. Cromwell Wall is standing on the right of the attached photograph Beside him is his wife Minnie and (from right to left Gladys, Hilda, Oliver and Leslie. Their younger brothers and sisters Hampden, Doris, Howard, Muriel and Phyllis are standing (right to left) beside them. The photograph was taken in their home 'Lyndale' in Parkhurst Road, New Southgate.
The hymn 'There is a Happy Land' was written by Andrew Young in 1838 and remains popular today.
