Woman shopper with a shop assistant at a Wholesale Market
In this photograph a female shopper is being helped by a supermarket assistant as she browses the soup aisle in this Cash and Carry Wholesale market, The Vale, Acton.
Following the end of the Second World War and the end of food rationing, there was an increase in food consumption which contributed to the emergence and popularity of self-service supermarkets.
By the end of the 1960s, there were more than 3000 supermarkets in operation in the U.K., including chains such as Tesco and Sainsburys. As the majority of the food shopping was done by women during the 1950s and 60s, they were the principal users of the new supermarkets.
