Exterior view of Heathrow's Terminal 1
Photograph of the newly opened Terminal 1 at Heathrow airport. The terminal opened in 1968 and was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in May 1969. At this time it was the largest short haul terminal of its kind in Western Europe and approximately 5 million passengers a year were using the airport. Car parking at the terminal was limited because it was felt that many passengers would be driven to the airport by their chauffeurs and there wouldn’t be a demand for long stay car parks.
