Entrance to Senate House
Senate House is the principal building of the University of London. In the 1920s as the university was expanding the need for central administrative offices became apparent and a large parcel of land in Bloomsbury was identified. Senate House was designed by architect Charles Holden. It is built from Portland Stone and the tower is 210ft high making it the second tallest building in London at the time of construction (the tallest being St Paul’s Cathedral). King George V laid the foundation stone on 26th June 1933 and by 1937 the building was complete. The building now also contains the university library.
