Loading Victor cars for shipping to the United States from King George V Dock

In this photograph dock workers are pictured loading Victor cars onto a boat in preparation for them to be shipped to the United States. The boat is moored at King George V Dock.

The third of the 'Royal' docks, King George V Dock was built to assist with the trade that was already passing through the Royal Victoria and the Royal Albert Docks. It was designed with modern shipping in mind and was well-equipped with electric cranes and mechanical devices, seen here, to aid the dock workers.

The entrance to the Dock was suitable for large steam ships, container ships and passenger liners. The main goods that traded through the site were actually food supplies, such as frozen meat, vegetables, fruit and grain.
