Boy standing on the steps of a house in Ladbroke Grove
A boy on the steps of a house in Ladbroke Grove. Made during the filming for Leslie Daiken's film 'One Potato, Two Potato' (1957) which portrayed children playing in their playground - the streets. By the early 1900s the Ladbroke Estate, which had largely been built between 1823 and 1833, had become predominantly working class and the the large houses divided up into flats. By the 1950s the area had degenerated further and become synonymous with inner city deprivation. Several photographers worked in the area at this time, not only to raise awareness of the living conditions, but also to convey a sense of the communal spirit they found there.
