Hop pickers in Yalding, Kent
Hop workers at Yalding in Kent in 1952. Hops are the ingredient that adds bitterness to beer. Hops have been grown in Kent since the 16th century and every September farmers would invite workers from Kent, London, Sussex and East Anglia to come and pick the hops. The workers would stay in huts on the farms and would work for 6 weeks until the harvest had been collected. Often the same families came ‘hopping’ in Kent every year.
