Mobile hop pickers in Yalding, Kent
Mobile hop workers at Yalding in Kent in 1951. Hops are the ingredient that adds bitterness to beer. Hops have been grown in Kent since the 16th century and every September farmers would invite workers from Kent, London, Sussex and East Anglia to come and pick the hops. Once collected the hops were measured into large sacks called ‘pokes’ which were filled until they were solid and were then taken to the Oast house where they were dried.
