A man sitting in the interior of a house on Ellingfort Road, Hackney, gazing out of the window
This photograph is one of a series of images by Tom Hunter which portray the occupants of Ellingfort Road in Hackney, East London, inside their homes. By 1994, the majority of inhabitants of the houses were squatters and threatened with eviction by Hackney Council.
Hunter's set of photographs are associated with the three-dimensional model he made with fellow artist James McKinnon of Ellingfort Road. The model, made out of wood, paper and photographic images, was called 'The Ghetto', after the nickname given to the area by the residents.
Hackney Council was unsuccessful in its attempts to demolish the houses on Ellingfort Road and replace them with industrial units. Instead, the houses have been refurbished. In this view of an interior in one such house, prior to its redevelopment, a young man sits by a fireplace looking out of the window.
