A group of friends in a dimly-lit interior of a house on Ellingfort Road, Hackney
Ellingfort Road was nicknamed 'The Ghetto' by the squatters who resided there. During the 1990s, they were repeatedly threatened with eviction by Hackney Council who considered replacing the houses with industrial units. The street itself was saved from demolition and the houses are currently being refurbished.
Tom Hunter was a resident of Ellingfort Road and took a series of photographs of the interiors of houses on the road. This photograph includes a group of friends sitting in a kitchen, wrapped up against the cold. East End communities often appear in Hunter's work and this is one of several photographs by him in the Museum's collection.
