Three friends sitting in their kitchen of their house on Ellingfort Road, Hackney
This photograph by Tom Hunter depicts the inhabitants of a house in Ellingfort Road in Hackney, East London. The trio are shown in the kitchen of their home, looking towards the doorway which is veiled with beads. In 1994 Hunter produced a series of photographs which focused on the interior of houses on Ellingfort Road, nicknamed 'The Ghetto' by the squatters who lived there.
During the 1990s, Hackney Council tried unsuccessfully to evict the squatters and turn the houses into industrial units. The majority of the residents of the street were artists and included Hunter himself. With fellow artist James McKinnon, Hunter produced a three-dimensional model of the road out of paper, wood and photographic images. The model, which is in the collection of the Museum of London, focuses on the function and development of the residential buildings.
Shortly after graduating from the Royal College of Art, Hunter won the John Kobal Photographic Portrait Award. He currently lives in London and his work often focuses on communities in the East End.
