Printed Ephemera — 1983
1973-1983: Ten Years of Resistance in Chile
Poster captioned '1973-1983: Ten Years of Resistance in Chile'. There is a central image of a map of South America, with the western side marked by a red raised forearm and fist. The poster publicises a march taking place on Sunday 11 September 1983 culminating with a rally in Trafalgar Square, organised by the Chile, El Salvador and Nicaragua Solidarity Campaigns. The Chile Solidarity Campaign was set up in 1973 after the democratically elected Chilean government was deposed in a military coup. The leader of the coup, Augusto Pinochet, imprisoned, tortured, killed and expelled many of his political opponents. Democracy was not restored to Chile until 1990. During this period over 2,500 Chilean exiles settled in Britain, mostly in the capital.
