Brown hessian sampler, worked in cross stitch in coloured silks (red, light and dark blue and brown) with simple cross stitch border, rows of conventional patterns worked alternately with the alphabet and numerals, A moralising verse is worked in black thread 'SWEET IT IS TO SEE A CHILD / TENDER, MERCIFUL AND MILD/ EVER READY TO PERFORM/ ACTS OF KINDNESS TO A WORM'. Along the bottom edge is embroidered 'Emma Fox Novr 15th - 18'. Two sides hemmed, two sides selvedge. The last two numerals of the date have been unstitched. Condition: two dark stains.
