Printed Ephemera — C.1809
Jack of Guinea
Songsheet printed with the popular song 'Jack of Guinea'. Its six verses tell the life story of a Black servant who was brought over to England from the coast of Guinea in West Africa. Each verse recounts a different chapter in Jack's life and lists the masters he worked for including an actor, a lawyer and a doctor. The song ends happily with the lines: '"Negro" girl I see: love her sweet as honey, Soon she marry me; She and I have money.'
