Commendatore Giovanni Batista Ortelli, a successful London businessman, founded the Ospedale Italiano in Bloomsbury in 1884. The hospital helped sick Italians who could not afford to pay for their own health care. For one hundred years it undertook this vital work, and achieved an excellent reputation. However, the Italian Hospital found itself increasingly struggling with debt. In 1990 the hospital finally closed down.
