Social History — 1700-1799
Nail
London was surrounded by villages each with their own small parish church. Many had been built in the medieval period such as the one at Greenford, dedicated to the Holy Cross. In the 18th and 19th century, the population and number of houses in villages surrounding the capital increased. Often the parish churches were in a poor state of repair and required restoration. Holy Cross, Greenford, according to the antiquarian Daniel Lysons, was repaired in 1783. This wrought-iron hand-made nail probably comes from the roof of the church.
