Buddhist monks, including the venerable Viradhammo
The Venerable Viradhammo is the Buddhist monk pictured in the centre of this photograph. He joined the Hampstead Vihara in the late 1970s, a Buddhist monastery which had existed in London since 1956. The monks found it difficult to follow their religious lifestyle in an urban setting. So in 1978 they sold their Hampstead property, accepted the gift of some land in West Sussex, and bought a large house nearby which they converted into a new monastery.
