Printed Ephemera — 1977
Stuff the Jubilee!
This flyer, issued by the Socialist Workers Party represents the Anti-Silver Jubilee sentiment that was as much a key feature in 1977 as the celebratory street parties and rejoicing marking Queen Elizabeth II's 25th anniversary on the throne. Protest against the monarchy found an outlet through both punk and Socialist organisations that were steadily gaining influence, particularly amongst young people during the 1970s. The flyers were produced as part of the Socialist Workers Party 'Stuff the Jubilee' campaign that particularly exploited concerns about the rising cost to the British taxpayer of the Civil List and the extended royal family. This is one of three similar flyers that capture the essence of the anti-jubilee campaign and reveal one of the ways in which the SWP promoted their message. It is likely the flyers were distributed amongst protestors attending anti-jubilee events such as the 'People's Jubilee' at Alexander Palace, oganised byt he Communist Party of Great Britain.
