The Explosion at Holloway
'The Explosion at Holloway' December 20 1913. Newscutting from the Daily Telegraph showing the minor damage caused by two bombs at Holloway prison and a local 'safe' home used by militant Suffragettes.
Holloway prison was targeted by Suffragettes due to concern about the mental state of Rachel Peace. Rachel had been sentenced to 18 months hard labour in Holloway for arson in November 1913. The bombs caused minor damage to the outer brick wall of the prison. Bomb-making equipment was found in the garden of 12 Dalmeny Avenue, a safe house backing on to the prison, from where Suffragettes shouted at prisoners and serenaded Emmeline Pankhurst with a cornet. However no Suffragettes were arrested for the bombing.
