An anti-Franco demonstration outside the Spanish Embassy in London
This photograph shows a protest against General Franco, ruler of Spain from the 1930s. Millions of working class Spaniards were forced to find work abroad because of their country's postwar economic problems. Spanish restaurants, supermarkets, travel agents and schools sprang up to service the increased Spanish population in London. The number of Spanish migrants dropped in the mid 1970s when Franco died and the country became a democracy.
