Printed Ephemera — 1988-04-30
Handbill, flyer
This flyer announces a march organised as part of the campaign against the introduction of Section or Clause 28 of the Local Government act introduced by Margaret Thatcher's Conservative Government. The demonstration took place one month before the Act passed into law and was one of a number of similar demonstrations in London and Manchester that brought together activists, trade unionists and members of the LGBT+community. Section 28 of the Act stated '‘a local authority shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality or promote the teaching an any school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.’ Anger and dismay about the Section/Clause 28 unified the gay and lesbian community in a sustained campaign of demonstrations and militant acts. This unified pro-active approach to acceptance and equality laid the foundations of future activism including the establishment of Stonewall. Despite this resistance Section/Clause 28 was passed into law and only repealed in 2003.
