Hackney Hospital, 'E' block
Old Hackney Hospital 'E' block after closure, February 1988. Hackney, one of the most deprived inner-city areas in the country, had inadequate and outdated hospital services. One of the ward blocks in Hackney Hospital was described as 'arguably the worst general hospital psychiatric facility in the country'. From 1986, only 244 beds remained for elderly and psychiatric patients and on 5 July 1987, 50 patients left for the brand new Homerton Hospital, built just 400 metres away, which was equipped with the latest technological and medical resources. The remaining ward blocks at Hackney Hospital closed in 1995.
