Hearing impaired children in the classroom, Ackmar Road
Ackmar Road, later known as the London School for the Deaf, operated in Parsons Green, west London, from 1898 to 1983.
When this photograph was taken, in the 1950s, the school focused on teaching its pupils to communicate with non-D/deaf people, rather than through sign language with their D/deaf peers. They made use of technology such as hearing aids, microphones, headphones and induction loops to teach D/deaf children to speak and lip-read. Sign language was not commonly taught until the late 1970s.
