Simon Yudkin worked at the Whittington and University College NHS hospitals. He was a pioneer of child health in the early years of the NHS. He had a particular interest in the wider social issues of childcare that were to become a key feature of the welfare state. He died in 1968 aged just 54.
The site of the Whittington, was originally a hospital for patients with smallpox founded in 1848. With the creation of the NHS it merged with two other medical facilities in Archway and Highgate to become a key NHS hospital for residents in north London.
