Man smoking a pipe beside the lake at St. James' Park
A winter's day in St. James Park, December 1962. The winter of 1962-1963 has gone down in history as one of the coldest on record in Britain. By early January 1963 most of the country was frozen solid and, as can be seen in the photograph, even in central London the lakes and rivers were rapidly turning into sheet ice.
